During Reel Focus, classes in grades 4-7 attend a film program and a workshop at the Roundhouse Community Centre. Instruction is tailored for your age group. The day starts at 9:45 AM and ends at 1:00 PM. Classes attending a 10:00 AM screening will participate in an 11:45 AM workshop; classes participating in a 10:00 AM workshop will attend an 11:45 AM screening. Reel Focus includes a Film Study Guide with relevant information about the films and suggested discussion questions, activities and resources. When registering, please include your top three short film programs (listed below and on the right sidebar) and select your top three workshops (listed below). This will give us options to include your class, in case your first choices are not availabe. To ensure fairness, we will respond to reservations in the order in which we receive them. In case Reel Focus is fully booked, you will be placed on a waitlist. When possible, workshops will be added to accommodate the waitlist. 

The cost is $150.00 for up to 30 students. Payment can be made by cheque or credit card (additional fees apply), and must be made within two weeks of receiving your invoice. We require a minimum of one adult per 8 students, to a maximum of 8 adults at no charge. An invoice, itinerary and study guide will be provided. All reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration must be cancelled at least two weeks in advance of the festival or the full fee will be charged. There is a 30 minute snack break between the film and workshop. A courtyard is available for classes to eat outdoors, or you are welcome to stay in your workshop area during the break.


Animation Sensation

This highly imaginative short film program will change the way you see the everyday world around you. Discover the hidden life of ordinary office supplies, kitchen implements and newspapers as these talented animators breathe life into them.

Doc Day

Themes: ingenuity, self-esteem, hardship, determination, positivity, creativity, insight, nutrition, and nature.

DOC DAY - "Naina - Shoot for the Moon!"  
This is a program of short films about dreams, chance, and the human spirit! Join these characters as they ponder life’s big questions, and follow their dreams. 

The Nimble and the Quick

Wednesday, April 9 | 10:00 AM & 11:45 AM | ROUNDHOUSE COMMUNITY CENTRE
Themes: disability, creativity, ingenuity, teamwork, prejudice, and peace.

Ingenuity is the big theme in this short film program. Watch young characters using their creativity and imagination to make changes in their daily lives. 

Coming of Age

Thursday, April 10 | 10:00 AM & 11:45 AM | ROUNDHOUSE COMMUNITY CENTRE
Themes: fitting in, ambition, grief, memory, honesty, togetherness, family relationships, friendship, and growing up.

COMING OF AGE - "I'm Not Brave"
This wonderful program of short documentaries, dramas and animations take us on a whirlwind of coming-of-age journeys. Whether deeply philosophical, sweet and whimsical or plain old awkward, the experience of growing up is always an adventure. (Recommended for grade 6-7) 

Animal Kingdom

Friday, April 11 | 10:00 AM & 11:45 AM | ROUNDHOUSE COMMUNITY CENTRE
Themes: animal rights, freedom, independence, family relationships, nature, competition, and survival of the fittest.

ANIMAL KINGDOM - "Silent Voices"  
This program of animated shorts take us on wild adventures into the animal kingdom. From the sweet and gentle to the bizarre and occasionally gross, you will be impressed with the beauty and ingenuity of beasts, both real and imagined. 


digital filmmaking
In this interactive workshop, the class will learn the functions of a digital video camera, and a few insider tricks. Then students will break into small groups and film short scenes on their own throughout the Roundhouse.

cut-out animation
A variety of pre-fashioned and cut-out materials will be used to create characters and sets. In small groups, using video capture techniques, students will be taken through the steps of creating a short story. 

Students get animated! Choreographed by the instructor, the class will glide, disappear and fly through the air. This is a great introduction to special effects and stop-motion animation.

objects in motion
Using everyday office and school supplies, students will animate objects in new, interesting and imaginative ways.

Using paper and pencils, students will create traditional storyboards with stick figures and shapes, and learn how to organize their ideas for a film. The ability to draw is not required.

handmade film
Explore the art and history of cinema! Students will etch and draw on 16mm celluliod to create a collaborative short film. At the end of the workshop students will be able to see their work projected.

Students shape and mold characters with plasticine, and using stop-motion animation, will create short films in small groups. The plastacine is messy, and  all kinds of fun!
